  9. Here's some mail which was passed along to me and I though all of the
  10. Modem players here would REALLY be interested to know that
  11. the Government is considering taxing the use of Modems!!!!

  18. Two years ago the FCC tried and (with your help and letters of
  19. protest) failed to institute regulations that would impose additional
  20. costs on modem users for data communications.
  21.  
  22. Now, they are at it again.  A new regulation that the FCC is quietly
  23. working on will directly affect you as the user of a computer and
  24. modem.  The FCC proposes that users of modems should pay extra charges
  25. for use of the public telephone network which carry their data.  In
  26. addition, computer network services such as CompuServ, Tymnet, &
  27. Telenet would also be charged as much as $6.00 per hour per user for
  28. use of the public telephone network.  These charges would very likely
  29. be passed on to the subscribers.

  31. The money is to be collected and given to the telephone company in an
  32. effort to raise funds lost to deregulation.
  33.  
  34. Jim Eason of KGO newstalk radio (San Francisco, CA) commented on the
  35. proposal during his afternoon radio program during which, he said he
  36. learned of the new regulation in an article in the New York Times.
  37. Jim took the time to gather the addresses which are given below.
  38. Here's what you should do (NOW!):

  40. Pass along this message which contains
  41.     the text you are reading now.  Find other BBS's that are not
  42.     carrying this information.  Upload the ASCII text into a public
  43.     message on the BBS, and also upload the file itself so others can
  44.     easily get a copy to pass along.

  60. Here's the suggested text of the letter to send:

  62.    Dear Sir,
  63.  
  64.    Please allow me to express my displeasure with the FCC proposal
  65.    which would authorize a surcharge for the use of modems on the
  66.    telephone network. This regulation is nothing less than an attempt
  67.    to restrict the free exchange of information among the growing
  68.    number of computer users. Calls placed using modems require no
  69.    special telephone company equipment, and users of modems pay the
  70.    phone company for use of the network in the form of a monthly bill.

  72.    In short, a modem call is the same as a voice call and therefore
  73.    should not be subject to any additional regulation.

  78. It is important that you act now.  The bureaucrats already have it in
  79. their heads that modem users should subsidize the phone company and
  80. are now listening to public comment. Please stand up and make it clear
  81. that we will not stand for any government restriction on the free
  82. exchange of information.
